EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
The Education & Child Development program is for those volunteers who are interested in teaching; and teaching means working mainly with children. Our education program includes all manners of subjects/courses depending on your field of interest and capability. English language, Math, and Science constitute the educational program, but all other subjects like music, arts and crafts are welcome. We teach English to the day care centers/nursery/kindergarten & crèche, elementary/primary, junior high school and senior high school level. Please sponsor a child by channeling your contributions to NBBC FUND (.i.e. donation).
Day care centers
These children are between the ages of 2-5 years and are just beginning to pick up the local & English language. You need patience to deal with them and you must be someone who loves kids. Another benefit of teaching this age group is that it helps eliminate the fear and shyness often felt by children regarding speaking.
Elementary/Primary
In Ghana, our primary education ranges from stages 1-6 and their ages mostly range between 6 and 13 years. We run the program in such a way that the English Language is paramount to boost their English speaking and comprehension. Patience is the key on the part of our volunteers due to the fact that even though Ghana is known to be an English speaking country, but most people don’t practice the English language properly, especially in the rural areas.
Junior high school
The junior school level focuses mainly on intensive teaching. Students spend three years of intensive learning before graduating into the senior high level. Subjects taught at this level mainly include Math, Integrated Science, English, Social Studies, and Environmental Studies. You would be dealing with the adolescents and teenagers.
Senior High School
In our senior high school, classes mainly focus on expanding the vocabulary of the students and helping them to discover their professions before they graduate to become
useful citizens and be able to upgrade to the universities & polytechnics, teacher & nursing training levels. Hearing English from volunteers from all over the world greatly help these students to get used to the different accents and usage of English in the real world. You can also teach Math, English, Accounting, Economics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.
Your role as a volunteer
You will have the choice of either leading your own class or assisting another teacher in their daily lessons. Your placement is completely dependent upon your level of comfort within the classroom. You should be ready as a volunteer to teach a lesson plan designed be you after you observe each class and analyze what they need.
Program Schedule
Our school semester one usually has (February-July) as term one and (September –Middle of December). During holiday time we run classes for most schools. If your preferred placement dates coincide with school holidays, we may decide that there are sufficient teaching activities to still warrant a placement or we may suggest alternative travel dates. Our programs are all flexible and that is one of the KEY requirements to volunteering.
During school time you will typically be teaching from Monday to Friday for 4-6 hours a day; which includes time for lesson planning. These classes will either be in the mornings, afternoons or both. Every school day has two breaks, a morning break & a long lunch break. Some schools provide lunch for our volunteer teachers.
Program requirements
Volunteers participating in teaching projects should enjoy working with children. They should also be creative and self-motivated as even the most basic resources can be limited and require you to use your imagination to compensate for the lack of materials.
Program dress code
Teachers are expected to set an example for their students. Volunteer teachers should wear shirts, trousers, or skirts when teaching. We do not permit our volunteers to wear mini-skirts, T-shirts, tank tops, or shorts when teaching in schools. All dresses should be decent and attractive.
