WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
The program is meant to diversify women to be independent and to bring out their hidden skills & ability to do something. We realized that the poverty level in Ghana is very high especially with the women in the rural areas. This is because of the high drop out rate from school, teenage pregnancy and the belief that most women need only to live as house wives. Lack of finance/capital to start a skill also hinders these hardworking women. It is on this note that we have established this program for volunteers to help train women and young girls without a skill in the following activities and others:
-
Dressmaking (sewing)
-
Batik tie & die clothing
-
Hair dressing
-
Beads making and other trades
Volunteers normally complete the program to empower women so as to reduce the level of poverty and therefore enhance their livelihood. This program assists women/girls to learn a skill/trade in different ways financially and morally. We again assist them find market for their finished product.
Volunteers help aid them to engage in income generating activities, most of these young girls, who have taken to commercial sex work (prostitution) with its resultant HIV/AIDS pandemic and teenage pregnancy, are decently engaged.
Your role as a volunteer
Most of the women in the rural villages have the skill to trade/work to have a living standard but don’t have the resource/capital to commence business. They need support to carry out income generating enterprise. Volunteer should have that kind heartedness to support these women through skill training.
Apart form the financial support, a volunteer role will focus on the moral aspect of support in terms of regular counseling and meeting with women groups to talk to them on how to use their funds well to generate income and the lucrative enterprise they can enter into. The training of the unskilled shouldn’t be forgotten. This bring us to our long run plans of building a vocational training centre to train the unskilled to have a skill and to have a good living standards. We therefore encourage every volunteer to contribute a quota and donate at will to our DC Fund.
